Type of woodA variety of woods can be used for shoji doors but they must have a clear straight grain, be lightweight and flexible, and have stability through seasoning. Sitka Spruce and Alaskan yellow cedar are our favorite choices for these qualities and their availability. Alaskan yellow cedar is a wonderful looking wood. It has a lot of natural oils which makes it weather and pest resistant. It is perfect materials for doors in Hawaii, but the oil make it difficult to stain. In these cases, Sitka spruce is a good option with its pale white color. It can take the lightest colored stains true to the intended color.
Other woods available here are Douglas fir, Redwood, Honduras mahogany, Eastern oak. |
